THE MEDICINE OF THE BLUE JAY

Walking on the trail, I see a feather placed delicately into the trunk of the approaching cedar. She sits tall and twinkles in the light, with deep blues of the feather gleaming amongst the red glow. Entranced by the scene, I felt the feather was rather placed there for my eyes to see. The sacredness of the experience led me to leave the feather in its place.

Blue Jays speak to us in many ways, whether it be feathers, frequent visits, or dreams. Their loud call, persistent clicks, and the body language they display, tell us the energetic essence of their story and the wisdom they so persistently flow within. I remember when blue jays very prominently began to enter my life. I still marvel at the different stories they have carried by my side throughout this time. A few words come to mind when I think of Blue Jays: protection, strength, confidence, adaptability, and sureness.

From my experiences, Blue Jays have reminded me of the resiliency and strength that is found within my being. The confidence they possess is something awe-provoking. Mimicking their common predator (the hawk), they use this as a way to scare off other birds and potentially warn other Blue Jay’s in the area. Their ability to embody whatever spirit they desire (and doing so in a way that demands respect), is demonstrative of the strength in their medicine. They offer a medicine of decision and choice.

“Honor and make the most out of the place in which you land, do so by being sure within your step and appreciative of your surroundings.”

They show us our ability to make comfort within ourselves, and reflect that into our external world. They show us to see the gifts that the Universe offers us, and to be receptive to its offerings. For me, it is a way of assuring me that I am in the right place, as there is no right or wrong decision, only the decision that is

And as I sit to write this, I am accompanied by three Stellar Jay’s, calling loudly for my attention. They swiftly fly into the courtyard where I sit, dipping their heads in communication to those around them. As the fourth and fifth dance off in the distance, I sit here remembering that I am home— remembering that there is strength in acting within my truth, and remembering that I am always divinely guided.

In love,
